Abstract

This paper explores the application of digital archaeology in immersive education, by focusing on the creation of a website that allows WebXR-enabled visualization of archaeological monuments along several historic aqueducts (Roman, Venetian and Ottoman-Egyptian) in the HeraklionKnossos area in north central Crete, Greece. Moreover, the digital manipulation of the models produced will facilitate both teaching and research on a global scale. To this end, drone flights were conducted over several days at specific nodes along these aqueducts in Crete. The drone took hundreds of images for each structure, capturing them from multiple angles. This paper reports on the process of creating the models, the choices made by the team in their development, the development of a website to host these 3D visualisations (including tools suited for archaeology, such as a measurement tool and other data gathering devices), and finally discusses the platform’s future use in teaching and research.
