From School Gardens to Immersive Environmental Education: Using 360° Videos in Teacher Education

This presentation explores the use of 360° videos as an immersive learning resource for pre-service and practicing teachers to plan, construct, and integrate pollinator gardens into school curricula. The module combines a 360° immersive video, conventional video footage, written guidance, and a virtual tour to support both procedural competence (garden planning and maintenance) and pedagogical competence (using the garden as a living laboratory for environmental learning). Preliminary development took place in a Canadian elementary school, where Grade 7/8 students and teachers collaboratively built raised beds and a pollinator garden, with guidance from a local environmental non-governmental organization. All stages were documented using a 360° video to capture the full construction and planting processes. Future research will pilot the module using virtual reality, examining how immersive videos affect teachers’ engagement, confidence, and readiness to implement pollinator gardens, providing insights into the technical and pedagogical potential of 360° videos in teacher education.
