Abstract

This iLEAD paper examines how hackathons can support the development of educators’ design competence in generative AI-supported XR environments, using a participatory design approach. Across three sessions, educators with varying backgrounds co-developed a VR bar simulation using genAI tools. The format enabled rapid skill development, tool literacy, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Success depended on basic technical knowledge and team diversity. Beyond individual learning, the hackathons fostered a cross-institutional network for immersive learning across vocational, applied sciences, and academic education.
