The aim of this study is to present the methodology used for the design, development, and formative evaluation of an empirical escape room that utilizes Augmented Reality (AR) as a supportive tool for fostering empathy. The educational escape room was developed around the contemporary socio-pedagogical issue of forced migration and is entitled “The Refugee’s Journey”. Its design was based on the Design-Based Research methodology. The escape room was implemented in a physical space, had a duration of approximately 60 minutes, and was evaluated by 71 in-service primary and secondary education teachers in terms of the usability and acceptance of AR, as well as their perceived empathy concerning the challenges facing migrants during their journey to the host country. The results indicated that the teachers evaluated the use of AR as easy to use and demonstrated a high level of acceptance of its integration into the escape room. Furthermore, the results showed that the escape room using AR may enhance teachers’ perceived empathy toward the challenges faced by migrants during the refugee journey.
