Abstract

The ever-evolving emerging technologies are creating a digital ecosystem that affects the way we live, work, and learn, providing solutions but also challenges. This study aims to investigate the potential of the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) within instructional design courses that already leverage immersive technologies. The study design employs the action research mixed method with the recruitment of 38 participants from an undergraduate program. The students work in pairs to develop a 6-module course on an LMS platform and are requested to employ immersive technologies for more inclusive and effective learning experiences. Research instruments involve templates, peer-review assessment methods with rubrics and quality criteria, surveys, and reflective writing on the process (written report). Early findings suggest that the collaborative process allows for critical discourse upon the quality of content generated employing emerging technologies. Challenges and affordances are identified and reported, involving the aspects of instructional design that GenAI can facilitate, the time, effort, and skills building prospects. Findings also imply that there is a need for extensive training, and access does not ensure quality content, while the democratization of access to knowledge and professional growth that AI tools may provide can be challenged by economic disparities.
