Abstract

E-learning standards like Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) can support software developers and course authors at realizing innovative learning scenarios in distributed architectures. Standardized interaction processes enable learning platforms like Learning Management System (LMS) to delegate functionality to LTI-compatible external tools in a flexible way. An LTI-connection between an LMS and a gaming platform offers possibilities like embedding a game or game asset into an online course and sending player-specific data tracked during gameplay back to the LMS. This allows for a new, more objective, and data-driven evaluation of students’ individual learning performances, either for traditional grading processes or for alternative methods like Qualifications Based Learning (QBL) [3-5]. This paper outlines an approach which uses standardized interaction technologies for combining game-based and competence-based learning concepts.
